Jean-Talon Market

Located in the heart of Little Italy, the Jean-Talon Market is one of the biggest in North America. It's open year-round, so Montrealers can discover the expertise of our producers and artisans in summer and winter alike. One of the oldest public markets in Montreal, it was inaugurated in May 1933 with the aim of feeding the local population with fresh, local agri-food products, a mission that is still relevant today. It was originally known as Marché du Nord before becoming Jean-Talon Market in 1983, in honour of the first intendant of the Nouvelle-France.
Jean-Talon Market stands out for the large number of local fruit and vegetable producers, the diverse range of shops (butchers, bakers, fishmongers, grocers, etc.), and the restaurants that will whet your appetite during your visit. It's all part of a village atmosphere, a family place where generations have grown up, both as merchants and as customers.
Whether you're a locavore or looking for culinary discoveries, you'll find high-quality, seasonal and fresh everyday products from your local food producers and artisans. The Jean-Talon Market is bursting with local specialities, as well as products from elsewhere: there's something for every occasion and every taste.
As winter approaches in October, the Market puts up its walls and goes indoors, still offering a host of local products. Then, towards the end of April, when the temperatures warm up, you can stroll through the various outdoor aisles to meet your producers and merchants.
And summer means pedestrianisation. From June to October, the aisles of the Jean-Talon Market are closed to cars on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 11am to 5pm.
Jean-Talon Market is also easily accessible by bus or metro, with stops just a few minutes away. The Market also has nearly 400 outdoor parking spaces in the vicinity of the Market, including 300 in the indoor car park.
